Relationship between Intima-Media Thickness of Carotid Arteries and Coronary Stenosis in Angiography

چکیده
Objective: To investigate the relationship between atherosclerosis of carotid arteries and coronary arteries. Methods: This was a cross-sectional case control study and 100 patients took part in it. All participants underwent angiography to determine if they had coronary stenosis. Fifty angiography positive patients were selected as case and 50 angiography negative served as control. With a 7 MH probe, intima media thickness (IMT) of carotid arteries was measured by B-mode songraphy. IMT over 1 mm was considered as significant atherosclerosis. stenotic lesion over 50% of cross sectional surface of any coronary vesselse was defined as significant coronary stenosis Results: Of 50 patient with significant stenosis in one or more coronary arteries, 38 had carotid IMT over 1 mm. Of fifty normal coronary individuals, 10 had carotid arteries thicker than 1 mm. Chi square test shows a significant difference between case and control groups. The relative risk of coronary heart disease for persons, who had carotid IMT over 1 mm at carotid sonography, was 3.43 (CI 95% 4.75-2.47) Conclusion: Carotid Intima-media tkickness over 1 mm increases the risk of signficant coronary artery disease (RR=3.43). The relationship between carotid intima–media thickness and global atherosclerosis
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between (i) carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) at baseline as well as (ii) change in CIMT over 5 years (ΔCIMT) and atherosclerotically induced luminal narrowing in non-coronary arterial territories assessed by whole-body magnetic resonance angiography (WBMRA). METHODS AND RESULTS In subgroups of the Prospective Investigat...
متن کاملRelationship Between Carotid Intima-Media Thickness and the Presence and Extent of Coronary Stenosis in Type 2 Diabetic Patients With Carotid Atherosclerosis but Without History of Coronary Artery Disease
OBJECTIVE We examined the relationship between the presence and extent of coronary stenosis and carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in type 2 diabetic patients without history of coronary artery disease (CAD) but with carotid atherosclerosis. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 91 type 2 diabetic patients underwent multi-slice computed tomography coronary angiography. RESULTS Max-IMT i...
متن کاملCarotid intima-media thickness by B-mode ultrasound as surrogate of coronary atherosclerosis: correlation with quantitative coronary angiography and coronary intravascular ultrasound findings.
AIMS Although well supported by postmortem studies, the reliability of carotid atherosclerosis as surrogate marker of coronary atherosclerosis has been put in doubt by in vivo studies showing a poor correlation between carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) detected by external carotid ultrasound (ECU) and coronary stenosis assessed by quantitative coronary angiography (QCA). In the present study...
متن کاملThe role of level and function of High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) in Cardiovascular Diseases
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is a set of particles with heterogeneous structures that have different functions due to various compounds including surface charge, size, lipid, and protein compounds. Several prospective epidemiological studies have demonstrated that there is a clear inverse relationship between serum HDL concentration and risk of coronary heart disease, despite this relationshi...
متن کاملSlow Coronary Flow is Related to Increased Carotid Intima-Media Thickness but Not Pulse Wave Velocity
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Slow coronary flow (SCF) is characterized by delayed contrast dye opacification without significant stenosis of epicardial coronary arteries. However, the pathophysiology and clinical implications of SCF are not fully understood. Some reports have suggested that SCF might be caused by atherosclerosis in the coronary artery microvasculature. Measuring carotid intima-med...
